6 Reasons to Choose a Summit Stair Lift

1. Peace of Mind
The Summit stairway lift was designed by a four-man team to make sure nothing was missed.

Footrest safety sensors stop the lift in either direction should it strike anything on the stairs. The seat is equipped with a seat belt and a safety switch that prevents the unit from running unless the seat is in its proper position. The aircraft cable has mechanical and electrical safeties to stop the lift in place and shut down the power if the cable is not at its proper tension. Limit switches shut the unit off in the same place at the top and bottom of the stairs automatically. This is our way of offering you and your family members peace of mind regarding your safety.
2. Comfort
The Summit stairway lift has a wide, thick, padded seat available in vinyl or rich, leather upholstery that folds up when not in use. The large rocker switch on the arm of your choice and a 180-degree swivel seat make using the lift simple.

A magazine rack was added to make sure every consideration was given to meeting your needs. The fold-up footrest adjusts to two different levels to suit your needs, and the backrest has three different positions to make sure you are as comfortable as when you are sitting in your favorite chair. Every facet of the lift was designed to enable you to relax and enjoy using your Summit stairway lift.

3. Reliability
Each part of the Summit stairway lift has been designed to make sure you can depend on your lift when you need it most.

Little things have been added such as a power indicator light on the track assuring you that unit is ready to use. The aircraft cable in the drive system is rated 4,200 lbs. breaking strength. A spare fuse is under the 115-volt plug so you can replace it yourself if necessary. The motor and gear have been tested in excess of 30,000 cycles – 16 years of use – and neither showed excessive wear.

4. Flexibility
The Summit stairway lift can be placed on either side of a staircase, and the unit control can be placed in either arm.

By adding or cutting the track, you can modify the length of the unit should you ever need to relocate. Standard call controls are mounted on the floor at each end of the staircase and can be foot operated or can be placed on the wall and operated by hand. Either location allows you to call the lift to you regardless of where the lift is on the track. This flexibility enhances the resale of the lift – and yes, the warranty is transferable should you decide to resell your lift!

5. Maintenance-Free
As strange as this may sound for a mechanical device, there simply isn’t any maintenance for the Summit stairway lift. No grease, no oil, no powders, no lubricants, no parts designed to need upgrading, no battery replacements, no maintenance of any kind.

Unlike most lifts that have gearboxes with vent plugs, the gearbox on the Summit Lift is completely sealed, preventing the possibility of oil leaking onto your carpet. Virtually all other lifts also use gear racks and pinion gears (rack and pinion) to drive the lift. These must be lubricated with dust-collecting grease to prevent damage from occurring. Summit Lifts believes dust collecting greases belong in your garage - not in your home.

6. Security
Why use eight rollers when four will work? Why make the parts ourselves when purchasing them overseas is cheaper? Why use an aircraft cable strong enough to tow a car?

Why test each lift before it is shipped? Why use UL and CSA listed components on all electrical components? Why hand-assemble each piece? Why used standard off-the-shelf parts allowing you to service the lift yourself once the warranty is up?

Because Summit Lifts refuses to have the quality of their lift surpassed by anyone.

That’s why.

Features of the Summit Stair Lift

Chassis & Drive Train
1. No oil / vent plug in gear – the gearbox is sealed and is filled with grease instead of traditional gear oil. This means no chance of leaking or spillage. The gear is one of the largest in the stairway lift market today. The aluminum casting used in its design allows for lighter weight to go with its maximum performance.

2. Drive system – a belt is used between the motor and gear instead of a direct connection as manufacturers were unable to guarantee the elimination of key noise between a coupled drive system. It also simplifies serviceability.

3. Motor – Through the design of a dual capacitor system, the instant reversing motor (1/3 hp, 110vac) uses only 3 wires and runs at 6 amps at full load. This allows installation in the home without need for a dedicated outlet.

4. Aircraft cable – using 3/16” dia. Cable instead of traditional 1/8” dia. Cable allows for a breaking strength of 4200 lbs. vs. 2000 lbs. The cable wraps on an aluminum cast drum, grooved for each wrap. This eliminates noise and problems caused by stack winding issues. The cable system is direct drive – meaning there are no pulleys and the cable does not move.

Customer Features
1. Seat – the seat is wide for larger passengers and has the following features:

Optional colors – 3 in vinyl and 3 in leather

A large, easy to use paddle switch on the armrest

A 3-position adjustable height back rest for optimum comfort

180 degree swivel as standard

2. Unit – the chassis has several unique features as well:
A magazine rack that can be used for books, newspapers, etc.

A 2 position adjustable height footrest for persons of varying height and disabilities

Eight rollers instead of the traditional four. This gives a more consistent ride with less movement. It also cuts in half the load on each roller eliminating flat spots and premature roller wear

3. Track – features of the aluminum extruded track include:

A completely smooth bottom. This allows the lift to sit firmly on the stair noses and reduces permanent ridges or marks left once the lift is removed.

Track splices located immediately next to the roller channels to provide for an optimum ride at each splice – not on the bottom of the track.

Conduit channels in the track to reduce installation time and improve the look of the overall installation. This eliminates holes in the wall / stairs.

Installation & Service
1. Weight – the heaviest component of the lift is 70lbs, allowing for a true one-man installation.

2. Installation – if the track is cut prior to going out to the home, this installation can be accomplished easily in 90 minutes. This is done by providing several small, yet important features in the design:

Track brackets on the wall side only

A trough extruded in the track for use as a conduit for the call control wires

Footswitch call controls (can be used as a wall mount if desired). These are mounted to the floor at each end of the track

No stripping or connecting of individual wires. Internal wires – including the power cord – are connected via modular plugs

By placing the hardware needed in the proper location prior to shipping, hardware packages are eliminated.

3. Flexibility – the unit can be cut down in length, track can be swapped between units, or it can be reversed in the field without cutting any wires or using any additional components. It is ideal for renting.

4. Seviceability – the electrical components are easy to reach for testing when service is needed. Harnesses can be unplugged to perform voltage checks. The limit switches are larger and more durable than other lifts to assure long life.

5. Spare parts – a large number of the components are off the shelf items available at OEM stores around the country. This allows for immediate access to parts needed if service is required.

FAQ

What is a stairway lift?
It is a motorized lift that attaches to a staircase and carries a physically challenged or disabled person up and down the stairs. A moving chair is guided by a narrow track attached directly to the steps. The Summit Stairway Lift requires no modifications to the structure of the home for installation.

How much room is required to install a stairway lift?
The track on a Summit stairway lift takes up less than 10” of your staircase. When folded up, the unit uses less than 14” space. If your staircase is less than 36” wide, it is recommended you sit the user in a chair that is up against a wall, and measure the distance from the wall to the users knees. Once thisis forwarded to the manufacturer, they can assist you with determining if you have enough room to use your lift properly.

How much weight is the stairway lift capable of carrying?
The Summit stairway lift is rated at 300 lbs capacity. This is designed for use by one person at a time.

Is it safe?
Several features are designed into the Summit stairway lift to assure the safety of both the user and others within the home. The footrest has safety sensors to stop the lift in either direction should it strike anything on the stairs. A swivel safety switch makes sure the seat is in the proper position before allowing the unit to run, and a seat belt is standard.

The aircraft cable used for lifting has mechanical and electrical safeties to stop the lift if the cable is not properly tensioned along with a rating of 4,200 lbs. Limit switches shut the unit off in the same place at the top and bottom of the stairs automatically.

The constant pressure controls are designed to stop the lift the second the controls are released. This is all part of making sure you and your family members will be safe.

How much will it cost to maintain the stairway lift and have it serviced?
The Summit stairway lift is unique in this area as it is the only lift on the market that makes the claim “no maintenance needed” during the warranty period of the lift - AND it has the longest standard warranty of any american manufacturer, covering all parts (except upholstery wear & tear - labor not included) for a period of 3 years.

Most other units use rack and pinion drives requiring regular lubrication with grease. Summit believes dust-collecting grease belongs in your garage - NOT IN YOUR HOME.

About Summit LIfts and its Founders

We, at Summit Lifts, bring 75 years of accessibility lift experience into our manufacturing, service, and design.

Our goal is simply to provide you with the highest quality lift available.

To that end, we began a two-year project to design a stairway lift that would be without equal in terms of safety, reliability, maintenance, comfort and flexibility. A lift we could build in our own facility from scratch – reminiscent of days when things were done the right way. No shortcuts. No cheap substitutions.

The result: a lift that has the longest standard warranty in the industry and the only lift requiring no maintenance for the duration of its warranty. A lift so durable that it has a warranty unmatched in today’s market.

A lift made in America the traditional way.

Beginnings…
When Mark Hill started painting for a small company that made stairway lifts in 1972, he was looking for a place that rewarded hard work and determination – a place where people cared about the quality of their work – where you were more than just a number. He worked at such a place for 20+ years learning every aspect of assembly, production, and quality. He was continually promoted through the blue-collar ranks to a Supervisor, where he oversaw production of accessibility equipment for several years.

In 1981, Mike Vogt began working for that same small stairway lift company as a draftsman. He had been looking for a good job in order to get married to his high school sweetheart and live out the American Dream. His 10 years of designing lifts were followed by 9 more years of running the company’s Service “Complaint” Department and retail sales division.

Mark Jackson began his career at 19 as an apprentice in a local blow-mold business and worked his way to becoming a CNC Machinist and Tool Maker. During his twenty years with the same company, he learned 2D and 3D CAD software and machine programming to create precision parts. Mark spends his free time with his family and keeping up with the responsibilities of a homeowner. Mark, his wife of 17 years, and 3 children are active in their church. His dream for Summit Lifts is to provide a reliable and affordable lift for persons with difficulty with stairs.

They each have several children – are still married to their first wives – understand words like commitment, loyalty, integrity – and had an undying loyalty to their company. Each of them had planned on retiring from their jobs after 43 YEARS of service and discussed this among themselves due to their friendship with one another – but in today’s world of corporate buyouts and mergers, they were not allowed to fulfill this dream.

When this happened, they discussed whether a company could be run like those from days gone by – where faith in God and family was more important than the bottom line – where hard work was rewarded – where the word quality was something more than empty rhetoric. It is out of this background that Summit Lifts, Inc. was started.

Three men- looking to make a product that helped others, running a company where shortcuts are not an option, and believing that the words “Made in America” still mean something.
